Lady Stingers Make History During the 2016 Softball Season

This year’s Lady Stingers softball team became the first in the college’s history to compete for the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship in Clinton, Mississippi.

The Lady Stingers set a school record when they went 15-1, while competing in Region X. At the end of the season when the team traveled to Burlington, North Carolina for the Region X Tournament, they defeated Pasco-Hernando State College for the prestigious title.

“What made this team special is their determination to preserver by winning three straight games in the loser bracket and having to play four games in one day with one pitcher,” said head softball coach, Heber Watson. “Ramsey Sherrill pitched over 540 pitches to help us clinch the title against the No. 1 nationally ranked strike out pitcher of PHCC.”

With a winning record of 32-11, the Lady Stingers came up just a little short in Mississippi, but they certainly played their hearts out. Darlington’s Ramsey Sherrill finished the season ranked as the No. 2 pitcher with a .65 ERA. She was named the region’s Pitcher of the Year. Heather Kirby was the runner-up for Player of the Year as well.

The Lady Stingers finished out the 2016 season ranked second in hitting, extended hitting, pitching and fielding within the Region X conference.
