GASTONIA, N.C. — The long ball proved decisive as Florence-Darlington Technical College dropped a 9-8 decision to Gaston College at Sims Legion Park.
The Stingers opened regional play with a tightly contested loss that featured explosive offense on both sides. Gabe Herold led the way, going 2-for-5 with a double and a home run while driving in four runs. Oneill Feliz added a home run and two RBIs, Jake Zehner collected two hits with a stolen base and an RBI, and Diego Garcia went 3-for-4, scored twice, and swiped a bag. FDTC used a five-run fifth inning to seize momentum, but Gaston responded late with a series of extra-base hits to reclaim the lead and secure the win.
On the mound, Mullen delivered five strong innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four. Dylan Shaffer was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs in one inning of relief. As a staff, the Stingers allowed nine runs on 11 hits. FDTC returns to Sims Legion Park on Saturday for a doubleheader against Gaston to conclude its first regional series of the season.
